Backpacks with wheels come as a solution for the kids who have to carry heavy load of textbooks to and from their schools. The Consumer Product Safety Commission, from latest available records, reveal that more than 3,000 children of age groups between 5 to 14 years had reported with backpack-related injuries to emergency rooms in 1999. Many of these injuries include Strains and sprains due to heavy backpack. American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends that the children of any age should not carry more weight on their back than that of 20 percent of their own weight.

Many backpacks with wheels ranging from $20 to $90, were tested for their carrying convenience. Most of these bags were made of nylon or polyester. When empty, most of these bags weighed 2 to 4 pounds, some were 5 or 6 pounds. While their conventional alternates would weigh1 to 2 pounds only. Weight of school backpacks is a screaming issue because, at times, even rolling backpacks need to be carried.

To evaluate how well they stand up under normal and adverse situations, these bags were put in a luggage tumbler, a big spinning drum, for 500 rotations. Some 20 students, aging between 8 to 12, were asked to try these bags out for carrying and handling convenience, steering ease, wheel noise, and how well comfortably they fit on their back. (Because backpacks with wheels are targeted for this age group; teens often prefer conventional backpacks, shopkeepers say.)

There are always new models of backpack available. Some of the designs that were tested have improved now and many have been discontinued from the market. But what this research revealed serves a useful guide for shoppers and parents to decide which backpack is idea for your kid.
